EarthSS 280B. Introduction to Radiocarbon. 1 Unit. (online-only)
Instructors: Czimczik (UCI) and Hopkins (UCR, ENSC 190/290)
This course, taught simultaneously at UCI and UCR, introduces students to the use of the radioactive isotope C-14 in climate change and air pollution research. With lectures, discussions, problem sets, and laboratory activities students learn about the origin of C-14, the different nomenclature used to express C-14 data, and the use of C-14 in climate change and air pollution research.
Passing the seminar will allow students to apply for paid internship positions at UC Irvine’s KCCAMS radiocarbon measurement facility.
Restriction: Graduate students only. Undergraduates working in the KCCAMS laboratories or conducting research with KCCAMS faculty and staff are encouraged to request access.
EARTHSS 256. Paleoclimatology and Paleoceanography. 4 Units.

This course explores past changes in Earth’s climate. Topics include tools and techniques used to reconstruct past climate from natural archives; records and mechanisms of past climate changes throughout Earth history; and lessons learned from the paleo-record for prediction of future climate.
Restriction: Graduate students only.
