Ice Sheet Modeling Lab

About

The Ice Sheet Modeling group is moving! As of Fall 2021, we will be located at Dartmouth College
Our new website is now https://icefuture.org

Our group focuses on the physics of glacier ice and how they respond to climate change. Ice sheets play a central role in the climate system: they store significant amounts of fresh water and are the conveyor belts for transporting snow that accumulates inland back into the oceans. If the current warming of the climate continues, the ice sheets will respond at a yet unknown rate, with unknown consequences for the rest of the climate system. A better understanding of the processes driving these changes is critical to improve projections of sea level rise.

We combine high-resolution numerical modeling with remote sensing and in situ data to improve our understanding of ice dynamics, determine how much Greenland and Antarctica will contribute to sea level over the coming centuries, and how they interact with the rest of the climate system. We use and develop the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) to address these questions. Click here for more information about our current projects.

Opportunities

New! I am seeking outstanding graduate students who are interested in working on ice sheet modeling to start in Fall 2022. A solid background in continuum mechanics and programming is preferred. If interested, please send me an email with a brief description of your research interests and background.

New! Postoc opportunity in ice-ocean coupled modeling of Thwaites Glacier. The project PROPHET (PROcesses, drivers, Prediction: modeling the History and Evolution of Thwaites) aims at improving model projections of Thwaites Glacier to reduce the uncertainty in the projection of the glacier’s behavior and subsequent contribution to sea-level rise in the future. This project is in partnership with Univ. of Edinburgh, Northumbria Univ. and MIT. Application deadline: Sept 30th 2021.
