UC Irvine Earth system science professor Eric Rignot, along with associate project scientists Jeremie Mouginot and Bernd Scheuchl have been awarded $2.6 millionby NASA to continue mapping ice motion in Antarctica and to generate and distribute research data. “Our team is tremendously excited to be given by NASA the opportunity to continue our exploration of the Antarctic continent with satellite radar interferometry data and deliver much needed high resolution ice velocity data to the scientific community,” says Rignot. “This is an important step in predicting ice sheets in a warming climate and their impact on global sea level.” The five year project will serve the highest science objectives of NASA’ Earth Science Mission Directorate in climate change research.
