These technologies can be of tremendous help. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can smart phone apps help us respond better to natural diasters? Could they be used to help detect and trace the spreading of a virus? Can virtual information networks help doctors improve their care of patients? They also learn to create innovative computer-based technologies that serve the needs of society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Secure Communication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you input any personal information online, you can usually assume that such information would be encrypted and kept private.  Often time, communication needs to be secure.  In Meeting 1, we explored different ways of coding sentences such that others without the coding key would not be able to decode and read the sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Secret Message<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our secret agent, Agent A., just sent us a video message. <\/p>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-video so-widget-sow-video-default-f379b959fc93\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"sow-video-wrapper\n\">\n\t\t\t<video\n\t\t\tid=\"sow-player-1\" class=\"sow-video-widget\" preload=\"auto\" style=\"width:100%;height:100%;\" controls \t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/video>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Can you understand it?  What do these pictures mean?  Is this an important message? Luckily, Agent A. also transmitted via satellite the following coded phrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.ps.uci.edu\/mathceo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/Meeting6_CodedMessage.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2172\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-subtle-background-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Your task: unscramble the message using the following key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each number in the message, do the following in order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Add 1<br>(2) Multiply by 3<br>(3) Take the remainder after dividing by 10.  (This is called &#8216;modulo 10.&#8217; Ex: the remainder of 92 modulo 10 is 2.)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this on this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fYi3CQ\" target=\"_blank\">Google Sheet<\/a>.  What do you find?  Can you make sense of this now?  What does the message say?  Is Agent A in danger and need our help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:42px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-subtle-background-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hint: Agent A. is very imaginative and likes to associate numbers with letters.  For examples<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-center has-accent-color\">0 = O , 1 = I ,  3 = E , 4 = A ,  . . . .<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Points Assignment:<\/strong> Earn +1 point for each letter decoded in the message.
