Let&#8217;s take three to four choices.  A simple way to decide is to just vote on it.  The restaurant with the most votes wins!   We can use the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1eLX9FOYTv2sUdpgxOsjAv0X7qqavnEKmEY7lr1yku50\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">worksheet<\/a> to help tabulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an easy method to make a decision.  But there are some possible downsides.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-subtle-background-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Possible Issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1)  What happens when there is a tie?  What should we do then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2)  What if no choice received more that half of the votes?  Would that be acceptable to you?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Point System Voting<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Voting for just one choice does not allow you to express how you feel about all the possible choices.  One way to see the preferences of group members is to allow everyone to assign points to their choices.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s give everyone a total of 10 points to distribute among the possible choices.  (For example, suppose we&#8217;re deciding between apple, banana, and cantalope.  You can assign the following: 7 points to apple, 2 points to banana, and 1 point to cantalope.  The total points add up to 10.)  After the assignment of points, we add the points up for each choice, and the choice with the most points win!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make the point assignments for your restaurant choices and sum up the points.  Is there a new winner?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Questions to Ponder:   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Did it take longer to find the winner?  Was it worth the time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) What if you have many choices to choose from?  And suppose your group has many people?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) Could this voting method lead to a tie?  If so, what would you do? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) Do you like this voting method?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top Preferences with Set Points<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes you and your friends have to make a choice among many possible options.  We see this in the selection of the Most Valuable Player of a sports league like MLB or NBA, where any player that plays in the league would be eligible to win.  We would like to have a fast method to select a winner that also shows people&#8217;s preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-subtle-background-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-background has-subtle-background-background-color\">For the NBA MVP selection, the voters, made up of sportswriters and broadcasters, vote for their top five choices: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.ps.uci.edu\/mathceo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/NBA_MVP.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1998\" \/><figcaption>1st-place vote = 10 points;  2nd-place vote = 7 points; 3rd-place vote = 5 points; <br>4th-place vote = 3 points;  5th-place vote = 1 point.  Source: Business Insider.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of before &#8212; asking everyone for one selection, or give a point distribution for all choices &#8212; we can ask each group member to give their first choice and second choice.  We then make a fixed assignment of points.  For instance, each first-place vote = 10 points and each second-place vote = 4 points.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this voting method for your restaurant choices.  Choose the number of top choices each person can make and set the point assignments.
