Here are some related questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is the population of the United States?  (This will give us an upper limit to the answer.)<\/li><li>Roughly what fraction of Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?  Can you guess?  See <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/cinco-de-mayo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Survey Results<\/a> (scroll down).<\/li><li>Roughly what fraction of those celebrating Cinco de Mayo will eat a taco?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>A Possible Prediction:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-subtle-background-background-color\"><strong>[US Population] x [fraction celebrating] x [fraction celebrating eating a taco]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Follow up question:<\/strong> Can you guess <em><strong>how many tacos<\/strong><\/em> will be eaten on Cinco de Mayo?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mother&#8217;s Day 2020<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:52px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-primary-color has-subtle-background-background-color\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Can you predict how many Mother&#8217;s Day card will be purchased in the United States this year for Mother&#8217;s Day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Make a guess.  Can you give a range for what this number could be?   For instance, what could be a <strong>maximum<\/strong> number of cards sold?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s build some relations and break up the problem into smaller pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Number of Mothers in the United State<strong>s:<\/strong> What fraction of US population is female?  What fraction of all US women are mothers?<\/li><li>Fraction of mothers receiving a Mother&#8217;s Day Card<\/li><li>Average number of cards a mother will receive<\/li><li>Fraction of cards that are purchased (instead of self-made).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make you best guesses.  Can you put all this information together to come up with a prediction for the number of Mother&#8217;s Day card sold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>A Possible Prediction:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-subtle-background-background-color\"><strong>[US Population] x [fraction of mothers] x [fraction receiving Mother&#8217;s Day card] x {number of cards received per mother] x [fraction of cards that are purchased]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>According to an article in LA Times, on May 10, 2019, entitled &#8220;<em>Americans are spending more on Mother\u2019s Day than ever before<\/em>&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-subtle-background-background-color\"><em>Mother\u2019s Day overall is the third-largest holiday for the greeting-card industry, behind Christmas and Valentine\u2019s Day, with 133 million sold for Mother\u2019s Day, according to the Greeting Card Assn.
