Within or outside of Southern California?<\/li><li>Where is the farthest you have traveled away from Southern California?<\/li><li>Do you know how far away that place is from your home in terms of miles?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Making Educated Guesses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-large-font-size has-subtle-background-background-color\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> What is the distance (in miles) from your middle school to UC Irvine?<\/p>\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Make a Guess:<\/strong> How many miles do you travel when you ride a school bus from your school to UCI?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make an Approximation:<\/strong> Can you think of a way to check this guess (without searching online)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Approximation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<strong>Time Duration<\/strong>) How long did you sit on the school bus on the ride from your school to UCI?    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<strong>Bus Speed<\/strong>) Roughly, what do you think is the average speed that your school bus is traveling at?  On a highway, the speed limit is 65 miles per hour.  Off highway, the speed can be between 20-25 miles\/hr to 55 miles\/hr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-text-align-center has-subtle-background-background-color\">Average Speed  =  (# of miles traveled) \/  (# of hours traveled)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <strong>multiply<\/strong> the average bus <em><strong>speed<\/strong><\/em> with the <em><strong>time<\/strong><\/em> you sat on the bus (in terms of hours) together, what do you get?  Is it close to what you initially guessed? Can you estimate how far away in miles is NYC from Southern California?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To travel to New York, it is faster to do so by flying.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you know how fast does a commercial airplane fly?  It is typically around 500 miles per hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you know how many hours it takes to fly from say Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to New York&#8217;s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)?  You can check the flight time <a href=\"https:\/\/flighttime-calculator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you figure out how many miles you will be traveling if you are flying around the globe once?  Say flying from Los Angeles to New York, then to London in Europe, then to Tokyo in Asia, then back to Los Angeles?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you estimate the total miles traveled without considering each leg of your trip?  [<strong>Hint:<\/strong> Think how many time zones you would have passed through?]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Earth&#8217;s equator is 24,901 miles long (which is 40,075 kilometers).
