The CJI postbaccalaureate (postbac) fellowship is a fully-funded one-year training program for recent college graduates interested in cross-disciplinary climate and environmental science (physical and social), career and professional development training, conducting community-engaged research, and building technical skills through hands-on research experience with a UCI faculty member. Fellows will be hired as Junior Specialists for a one-year, full-time appointmentwith a September 1, 2025 start date.

The CJI PhD fellowship is a fully-funded one-year training program for UCI PhD students interested in cross disciplinary climate and environmental science (physical and social), career and professional development training, and conducting community-engaged research. Fellows will receive one-year of funding ($38k annual stipend received in 12 monthly increments) plus CA resident tuition and fees for three quarters.

PhD fellows are responsible for completing the requirements for their degree in addition to the CJI program requirements.  PhD fellows should expect to spend approximately 20 hours per week completing program curriculum (including team community-based research projects) and attending other CJI-related events. Continuing UCI students are encouraged to stay involved with the CJI learning community at UCI after completing the 1-year fellowship.  This may involve attending CJI-sponsored seminars and events,  mentoring incoming fellows,  and continuing work on your community-based research project.

The Fellowship period runs from September 1, 2025 – August 31, 2026.

Applications for the 2025-2026 cycle will open on March 1st, 2025 with a deadline of April 30th, 2025.  More information will be posted here when available.

  1. Can international students apply? Yes, international students can apply, though we can not guarantee funding for non-resident tuition and fees. For this reason, we encourage international students to consider applying after their advancement to candidacy unless alternative funds for non-resident tuition are available. We recommend speaking with your advisor and/or student affairs manager about this.
  2. What if I don’t need any or all of the funding? Great! Apply anyway and note this in your application.
  3. I’m already conducting my PhD research with a different community partner. Can this be the focus of my community-based research project? No. All fellows must work on projects with one of our existing partners.
  4. Will my community-based research project need to be closely related to my dissertation research? Definitely not, but please let us know if you are interested in this and we will do everything we can to support you.
